Why is it so hard to un-fold paper back to its previous state?

Everytime my paper file gets caught in my bag it bends and the papers get ugly creases that never go away, why is this?

Paper is composed of lots of long fiber strands. When paper is folded, these fiber strands are bent, torn, and moved around in a way that isn’t nice and tidy any more, and it’s hard for them to move back to those nice positions. You can try bending each little crease back, but chances are the fibers aren’t going to play nicely.

Something that is possible to do though is to use a little bit of heat and moisture. If it’s a shallow crease, then you can actually put the paper between a couple of pieces of cloth, apply a mild amount of steam and pressure (yes, an iron will work… just don’t go crazy), and with a bit of patience you can get it to stay flat again. You can also use this technique to make very tight permanent creases as well.
