Why is it that something as small as a phone can have great battery life yet Laptops with a bigger footprint can only last 6-8 hours?

Phone’s tend to use a lot less power than a laptop, have much smaller screens, and aren’t on as consistently as laptops. Therefore it lasts a bit longer.
If you left your phone screen on and didn’t turn it off while watching a video or doing something slightly graphics intensive, the battery wouldn’t last much past 6 hours on most phones.
As far as laptops are concerned (I can only speak on Macbook Pro’s because that’s all I’ve had over the last 10 years) the battery can last about 6-8 hours if I am doing something intensive, like editing videos or doing graphic design work because the screen is on consistently, and the computers processing power is far superior to that of the cellphone, therefore it will use a lot more energy from the battery it has, even if its bigger.
