quicker breathes more actively cycle air in and out of the lungs, and when the body is low on oxygen, bringing as much air in and out as quickly as possible naturally works. Bodies and animals arent always the most efficient or perfect thing, creatures survive not because what they do is perfect, just because it works.

Thats why athletes recover without the rapid breathing and use things like breathing cycles to bring lots of air in and out without needing to spend energy on breathing rapidly.

You dont really need quicker breaths. If you can control your breathing you can take long and deeper breaths which would help you too. Most athletes do this. Of course, the long breaths would become increasingly quicker as you need more oxygen too.

What I have heard is that your our breathing is triggered by the acidity of the co2 in your lungs. It’s painful. Think of that little sting you get from a carbonated beverage. Now think of that in your lungs. It hurts and your lungs are responding to wanting to get rid of that quickly as it keeps coming in.
