Why is it that, when you floss your teeth after a long time without doing it, the gums get very swollen and red?

Its not the flossing that makes your gums swollen and red. Not flossing after a long time causes that, and so when you return to flossing you irritate the tissue even more. It takes constant flossing to reduce the swollen gums.
