Why is it that when you place a pot on top of the stove, the fire which is coming out of the gas burner seems to “open” as to allow the pot to “fit” ? This does not happen for stoves which have the burner a bit further down from the support of the pot!

Why is it that when you place a pot on top of the stove, the fire which is coming out of the gas burner seems to “open” as to allow the pot to “fit” ? This does not happen for stoves which have the burner a bit further down from the support of the pot!

The convection current of warm air and flame bends around the pot and turns more vertical again at the edge. The flame-in-progress is just following the moving air.
