Leather will loosen when it’s wet, then tighten as it dries. If the leather is stitched in place or otherwise restricted this will cause cracks, and fading

Different skins also behave differently and are treated during manufacturing differently. For examp!e, my sailing gloves are pigskin. Stiff when dry, soft and flexible wet. Tremendously abrasion resistant. I accidentally wore my cowhide cycling gloves on the boat once, and they disintegrated like wet tissue paper when i was hauling wet ropes.
