Why is scratching the skin only pleasurable when it is itchy?

Scratching feels good when your skin is itchy because it interrupts the itch signals being sent to your brain. When you scratch, it triggers mild pain signals that temporarily “distract” your brain from the itch, providing relief. But if your skin isn’t itchy, those pain signals don’t have the same effect, so scratching without an itch just feels uncomfortable instead of satisfying!
