Why is the bucket on an excavator shaped the way it is?

Ok, before I answer, I have to ask, what do you think it should be shaped like?

Because the long and short of it is that it’s designed to not push up or down on the material when swiveled. So when you tip the bucket, the curve of it slides through material, instead of lifting it up or mashing it down. It’s designed to work and effectively as possible. If it was just a big square you’d be pushing and pulling materialy around way more than you would actually be scooping it cleanly and efficiently.
