: Why is the phone screen black when looking it with sunglasses and on landscape view

Sunglasses are often polarized. You can think of this as the glasses being composed of loads of incredibly thin “slices” which block light from going through unless the wave is oriented the right way. We do this because light bouncing off of roads becomes auto-polarized for reasons I don’t currently remember, which makes it really hard to see in high sunlight. By blocking light polarized in that direction and only allowing through light polarized in another direction, you reduce the brightness of the road without reducing the brightness of things you need to see.
LCD screens are also polarized. This is to control the light coming out of them, creating the crisp edges you see on the screen instead of fuzzier blobs, and to allow the backlight to be brighter without washing out the image. So if you orient the phone so the polarizations don’t line up, you block all of the light of the screen from reaching your eyes.
