There are a few big players. Rice University, in Houston, has a big research budget and a reputation for being leaders in research. Texas Instruments was founded in 1951 after a reorganization at GSI, a company that used to make seismic monitoring equipment for oil wells.

There’s also a major NASA facility in Houston, the Johnson Space Center. And it’s located in Houston because NASA wanted somewhere with lots of land, good weather, and closely located near strong universities. They actually got the land from Rice University.
