If you are talking about a pencil. Then it’s likely that erasing caused the surface to be roughed up. The mark of the pencil is the same as it was before the erase, it has to do with the reflection. The tiny imperfections in the surface after erasure scatter the light bouncing less to your eye making it appear darker.
