SMS/MMS literally can’t support it natively, so it would have to be implemented as an extension to specific messaging apps. Messaging apps that wouldn’t recognize it would result in a lot of nonsense symbols being displayed.

Some apps like Whatsapp have bold and italics available. You just have to type you text between asterisks or underscores with no space between the symbol and the first letter (eg: `hello *bold*`)
