why music seems to change pace based on how awake or tired you are.

It’s been a while, but I’ve noticed in the past that when I’m sleep deprived songs I’m familiar with seem to play at a different pace (I think faster). Why does this happen? What is actually occurring in the brain?

In the morning, usually, we are fully relaxed, less stressed and with our peek attention. Studies suggest that around ~10am is when we have the best attention span during the day. Even if you think you work better during the night you are probably wrong, you just messed up your perception and sleeping cycle. We are not night creatures, therefore like our attention, our senses in general work better during the morning, so do listening. So you have the combination of a relaxed brain with it’s full attention potential, hence we get this “full experience” of music.
