The Earth is tilted at a slight axis. So at any given time half of the Earth is slightly closer to the Sun and the other is slightly further from the Sun. During the Summer Solstice (June 21st) the Northern Hemisphere is at the closest point to the Sun during the entire year, so there are more hours of daylight and it is hotter. During the Winter Solstice (December 21st), the Northern Hemisphere is at the furthest point from the Sun during the entire year, so there are less hours of daylight and it is colder. The Southern Hemisphere experiences the opposite.
