why the US keeps people who overstay their Visa in a detention center in the United States.

Doesn’t that kind of defeat the purpose? Why does the US detain immigrants, migrants, tourists, etc… who are in the country “illegally” for indefinite amounts of time? Wouldn’t it be cheaper for the country to just deport them? Not saying I agree with either practice, just trying to understand what the rationale is.
