Why use helicopters over big distances instead of planes?

Is this just pros and cons of helicopters?

Most of the time planes are used over long distances since helicopters are less fuel efficient, and require more maintenance. It is significantly more expensive to use a helicopter than a plane.

Helicopter’s big advantage is being able to take off and land vertically where a plane requires many thousands of feet of runway.

So I guess the answer to the question would be “If there is not a runway for a plane to land on or take off from”
