Perhaps its to reinforce the “not” circuit of your brain. Im no expert on the subject, but it seems logical to me.

Your teeth have had years and years of practice living in your mouth. They know exactly how big it is and how much room they have. When you bite your cheek, it swells up a little bit. Your teeth are not used to this intrusion, it is in their way, they are so used to the way things usually are.. so they bite it.
Like how driving your own car feels perfectly natural but driving someone else’s (perhaps bigger) car feels awkward at first.
