The number of stops and starts you make. When you leave on a road trip you are going at a high rate of speed with few stop for the most part of your journey but the closer you are to either your starting point or your destination the more stops and starts and turns you make.

Say you live in Miami, you leave your front door, turn at your drive, stop and turn at the light. Another stop and another turn then you get on the interstate highway, whatever one runs up the east coast. Now you can drive without stopping unless there is traffic until you get to your destination city, say D.C.. now when you get to the city you have to exit the highway and stop and start and turn several times, culminating in the final stop at your destination.

The further you are from the middle of the trip you are, the more you are gonna slow down, turn and stop your car, and thereby disturb any sleeping passengers with the change in motion.
