They have implemented very strict rules for social distancing. Including cerfews, shutting down schools and businesses, restricting travel, etc. They have also made a massive effort in tracking the spread of the disease in order to put people who might have been exposed in isolation to prevent further spread. We do not know how effective each of these measures have been but we do see that all of them together have a massive impact on the infection rate.

People who come into contact will either get sick or fight the infection off and become somewhat immune. It seems that very few people actually get sick compared to the others, so for every person who dies there may be thousands who get immune. After a time, if a significant percentage of the population is immune the virus can no longer spread effectively.
