Would a sponge kept submerged in soapy water when not in use keep it clean?

Would someone be able to keep a small dish of gentle soapy water by their sink and just keep their kitchen sponge forever submerged when not in use, as a way to make sure their sponges are always clean?

No don’t do that. If you want to disinfect your sponge get it wet and put it in the microwave for 1 min

I would imagine not. It would probably mold. Also I think soap just works because the suds and friction of washing detach microbes. I don’t think regular soap would disinfect. Maybe bleach?
