Can people really sleep with their eyes open? If so, how does that work?

My grandfather did.
My dad said it was because he was afraid the husband of whatever girlfriend he was with at the time would come, so he needed to always be ready to run.
As far as I know, he did it pretty much his entire life with no issues as a result.
