eli5 how do we differentiate between what is human nature and what has been socialized into us over generations

You and plenty of other anthropologists and philosophers would like to know this as well. It’s an old question, a complex subject that has been the focus of many a books and papers and PhD theses and scientific discussions. For anything beyond the very basic stuff like the instict of self-preservation or whatever, you’re not gonna get an ELI5 answer, at least nothing that isn’t at least half speculation at the very best.

I think it’s hard, but if I see variations across cultures or time, I’d assume it to be probably mutable.

There’s a pretty big range imo. It’s just that the self-destructive ones don’t last very long, and the ones that promote reproduction and conformity often have longer staying power.
