You and plenty of other anthropologists and philosophers would like to know this as well. It’s an old question, a complex subject that has been the focus of many a books and papers and PhD theses and scientific discussions. For anything beyond the very basic stuff like the instict of self-preservation or whatever, you’re not gonna get an ELI5 answer, at least nothing that isn’t at least half speculation at the very best.
