eli5 What happens to the uterus when there’s no period present?

If someone doesn’t have their period, what happens? Like to the egg, lining, etc. (I tried googling and only found “causes for lack of period” and such).

In a *normal* cycle, the ovaries and uterus have separate but concurrent and coordinated cycles (they keep each other informed, and go to work at the same time).

The ovaries get the oestrogen going. This tells the uterus to start thickening its lining, ready to cuddle a fertilised egg. If no fertilised egg, ovarian progestogen production drops and the uterus knows to let go the lining (shedding). This shedding and other stuff becomes “the period” aka menstrual fluid.

In some cases, no egg at all is released, but the menstrual fluid flow/period still occurs.

No period? That’s called *amenorrhoea*. It has many different possible causes, but is ultimately the result of either hormonal imbalance or anatomical irregularity.

Anatomical irregularity: absence of uterus, absence of Fallopian tube, absence of ovary, failure of ovary to receive or maintain egg cells.

Hormonal imbalance: generally related to disturbances in either or both of the hypothalamus and pituitary gland, intrauterine scarring, eating disorders.

Nothing “happens” to the uterus if there’s no period. Nothing “happens” to the ovary if no egg is released. They just keep on trying to do their jobs.
