Words are vague and nebulous things. An oxymoron is a phrase consisting of two self-contradictory words like “pretty ugly” or “jumbo shrimp.” Paradoxes are a bit more complex as there are several different classes of them. First are logical contradictions which are the most classic paradoxes. These include the paradox “This statement is false.” The second are veridical paradoxes which are statements that appear false but are true. These include the famous Monty Hall problem. The third are falsidical paradoxes which are statements that appear false and are false. These include incorrect math proofs. The fourth are impossible philosophical questions which include the Ship of Theseus or the problem of the heap.
