eli5: Why are some skills forgotten more easily than others?

For example, everyone knows that someone would still be able to ride a bike after years of inactivity. However, with things like instruments, muscle memory can be lost in just a few weeks of inactivity, and could be a total restart for the musician.

Fine motor skills compared to gross motor skills. Also, while you won’t have to totally learn from scratch, you definitely forget the finesse parts if riding a bike. I tried to ride a bike recently and I was not great.

Complexity factors in. Riding a bike boils down to “go fast enough to not fall down”. Playing an instrument has a lot more steps.

Conversely, repetition also factors in. I only pick up a guitar once in a blue moon, but I was an obsessive player when I was in high school, and there are still a few songs I can play perfectly, from memory. I can’t ride a bike though, weirdly. I learned, but I never enjoyed it enough to actually go biking, and I cannot ride a bike with any degree of competence.
