eli5: Why do biodegradable materials (e.g. paper) need to be recycled?

I’m assuming recycling (like most industrial processes), comes with its own carbon footprint / pollution overhead / energy consumption / etc., so why is it better to process these materials instead of letting them turn back into dirt in a landfill?

Biodegradable materials are usually refined for multiple reasons.

* They are valuable ‘waste’, they have purpose beyond their intended use.
* They’re cheaper to use as materials for creating products,
* The process of recycling biodegradable materials is much easier than regaining the materials from scratch.
* Reusing biodegradable materials has been a pushed norm for factories to use as an option, and is objectively less exhaustive nor wasteful.
