eli5 why plain water causes reflux?

sometimes when I drink plain water (nothing added like cordial, lemon/lime etc) I will get the worst reflux/heartburn feeling. Sometimes it feels like water is still sitting in my throat. Why does this happen?

It could be that your body senses you drink the water and it activates the digestive process. This increases the acid production and in turn, the reflux.

Depending on the source, it could just be bad water. If it’s highly chlorinated, try to let it sit for a while after filling the cup to let some of it air off.

Get checked for a Hiatal hernia. It’s where some of your stomach comes up in to your chest cavity. It allows acid to go back up your throat. Water does it alot because the water raises the level of the stomach contents and allows it to come back up the throat.

I have one and it freaking sucks

Your stomach’s a big pot that everything gets mixed inside. Reflux happens when some of the stuff inside starts creeping back up the way it came.

When your stomach’s not full, the “top” is further away so it’s harder for stuff to go back the way it came. When you add water, you fill the stomach, moving the contents closer to the “top” and making it easier for reflux to happen.

So a big part of dealing with reflux is portion control, not just in what you eat but in what you drink.
