How are scientists able state the age of an animal in the wild?

Saw a few videos of a shark being stated to be 392 years old, other videos of sharing that this turtle is the oldest in the world or this whale is this age etc.

How are they able to find the age of the animal?

Sharks never stop growing; so we can do a really good job of mathing out the age of a shark by getting good measurements….directly or relative to other objects

While many animals look similar to untrained eyes they are usually distinct from one another in one way or another to specialists….scar; distinct markings or fins.

If in 1850 someone described a hatching turtle on island abc with markings 1,2,3,4,5 and you returned to island abc and find a turtle with identical markings in 2050; you’d know the turtle was 200 years old (assuming ones in captivity show long lives….not every turtle species can live to be 100+)
