Currently suffering with a wisdom tooth that needs to come out and I don’t understand how it stops the pain when painkillers seem to do nothing?

It tastes vile, if burns, it makes me drool but within 20 minutes the pain is so much more bearable

It has benzocaine in it, which acts as a topical anesthetic. It’s the same stuff as Orajel. According to Wikipedia (source uncited FYI), it blocks nerve endings from sending pain signals by blocking sodium to start the signalling.
