How come the drunker you get, the more you want to drink?

In: Biology

Because when you are drunk you have horrible judgement. Also, you think that the awesome feeling will somehow be more awesome if you drink more

When you drink alcohol (or any kind of drug really) your brain releases dopamine, the pleasure hormone. Dopamine is also released when you’re having fun or having sugary food, for example, to tell you to do it again sometime.

But when you’re drunk, the brain is unable to function properly and releases way too much dopamine. This is why getting high on drugs again is so irresistible.

One of the effects of alcohol is removing inhibitions. Where normally you would decline excesses, when you’re drinking, you don’t think twice about things.

In my opinion there are two types of brain chemistry people have. In one type, the more you drink, the less you want the next one because you’re feeling the effects of the previous ones and they are making you drowsy, slow to respond, tired, etc. in the other, the more you drink the more you want the next one. The latter is also called the alcoholic’s brain and if that’s the way your brain works please be careful, and if you can’t please one day join AA. I don’t want to offend, I just know a lot of recovering alcoholics and they are very good people but their brain chemistry and alcohol don’t work well together.

Sober brain: Just a few drinks tonight. Don’t want to feel bad tomorrow.

Drunk brain: Feeling good from these few drinks. If some is good, then more is better. Woo!

Hungover brain: Damn it, drunk brain… Ow.

Because you’re an alcoholic. Normal people don’t feel an increased desire to drink just because they’re drunk.
