One of the main things toothpaste does is help remove plaque/left over food from your teeth. If you brush your teeth, then eat something, and then go to sleep, you’re spending the whole night with that remnants of food on your teeth. It’s better for them if that’s not there, which is why it’s best to brush your teeth right before bed.

You do have that as the case during the day, but always brushing your teeth immediately after eating isn’t considered practical and it is possible to over brush your teeth, so typically twice a day is seen as sufficient/good.
