How do fingernails and toenails work?

Does the (raw?) skin that is attached to under the nail stay attached and move along with the nail as it grows out from the nail bed?

I’m no expert, but the skin underneath does not follow as the nail grows. When I lost two toe nails, they dug in to the skin as they grew back, causing me to have to abraid away the top layers of skin every few days.

When you need to scratch something, you scratch with them. When you are done, you bite off as much as you can of the ends so that you can safely store them in your anus without perforating your colon
