While I don’t know about the shapes, I do know that the colors are created by burning different chemical substances. For example, when you burn Copper and when you burn Tin, you’re going to see two different colors. That’s the general idea anyways
Black powder (gunpowder) does the explosion, the colors change when you mix wother powders like salt
