Behind that lens is a sensor cell that the lens is focusing light onto. That cell is a semiconductor that’s covered in a little grid, and each “square” on that grid absorbs light and turns it into an electric charge. The phone then takes all those electrical charge signals and uses it to determine what you’re taking a picture of. It’s the same process as your phone screen making an image (electrical signals turned into light) but in reverse.
