How do mobile developers make profit when you buy an ad-free package for 1$ or less?

1. They make money off of ads
2. The average ad income per user over their “career” using the app is smaller than 1$.
So basically you are offered a way to “buy out” your “share” from the ad income and not see ads, while the people who opt not to do so still supply some income to the developer.
