how is it that when you have a nightmare, it’s always various specific things that come together that your brain recognises as unpleasant or distressing, why does this happen?

From what I heard, nightmares are supposed to train you for a situation. Example:

You have an exam coming. The brain doesn’t recognize the danger but it recognizes the anxiety it causes you, so you get a nightmare

I’ve always been really interested by the theory of dreams. I’m sure there are people on here who will be much more scientific than I am but from what I’ve gathered the general theory of either dreaming or nightmares is your brain “sorting” various bits of information from the day while it’s having to concentrate less on your daytime functions

I remember when I first started taking anti depressant medication I had crazy dreams for weeks. The one I had about centaurs being real was my favourite but I had horrific nightmares too until the meds settled down.
