: How do they track highest selling albums/movies?

If I’m buying an album/movie at my local retailer, how are they tracking the combined sales to announce how much they are actually selling? Do my retailers report their sales to a single company that tracks these?

I’m sure it’s pretty easy for theater chain headquarters to pull up ticket sales at any moment nationally to track how any movie has sold.

Stores don’t just materialize their inventory out of nothing. If your local retailer is selling an album or movie they had to purchase it from the producer of that product, the company that owns the rights to it. That company is going to know how many they sold, and since they are the only company that can make them will know that is the total number sold.

They aren’t counting how many a retailer sells, they’re counting how many they sell to a retailer.
