If I’m buying an album/movie at my local retailer, how are they tracking the combined sales to announce how much they are actually selling? Do my retailers report their sales to a single company that tracks these?

I’m sure it’s pretty easy for theater chain headquarters to pull up ticket sales at any moment nationally to track how any movie has sold.
