I’m not an expert, but a cursory glance (Wikipedia) seems to say it’s a) not super well understood and b) highly variable from person to person, but there does seem to be a primary personality, that tends to be passive and subdued, which to me, sounds like it’s more of one personality being fractured into different parts. As with pretty much anything, it’s probably not super helpful to think of it the way it’s portrayed on TV.
