How does hypnotism actually work?

There are kinda two brands of hypnotism.
First is the show hypnotism where someone on a stage is “hypnotized” to act strange and entertain a crowd, this isn’t really real. Typically the “randomly selected” person is a plant who plays along, or if it a group of people, one of them is a plant, who then gets “hypnotized” first, the other normal people seeing this kind of get socially pressured to play along too because they subconsciously don’t want to ruin the show and cause problems infront of so many people.
On the other hand, there’s hypnotism to do with memory. Where people who are hypnotized unlocks memories that they couldn’t recall before. This is a bit more legit and is kind of like a mindful thinking strategy that helps people recall what they couldn’t before.
