Normally when you sleep your body tends to stay in a sort of locked position, reason being that it prevents you from moving in response to your dreams.

Sleep paralysis is when your mind wakes up before the rest of your body. You’re still in a dream like state so you see things as if you were still dreaming and also why you’d be paralyzed. Your body hasn’t woken up yet, so you can’t move yet.
