how does snot work?

Does this happen to anyone else? When I have one nostril super congested, I can blow the other one and a long solid string of snot stuck together will come out, but when I blow the congested nostril it just sprays out a little and doesn’t fully coagulate or clear. I mean, you would think the nostril with more snot in it would be more likely to blow out cleanly and satisfyingly but it’s essentially the opposite.

Aha, well your error here is thinking that the congested nostril is that way because of snot. In fact it’s-not! (sorry)

Instead what is happening is that our noses have a “nasal cycle” where one side of our nasal passage tissue becomes swollen with blood and fluid while the other opens up. It cycles back and forth giving each side a break from constant movement of air, renewing and protecting itself. That swelling actually makes the nasal passages smaller and you feel this reduced movement of air without actually being able to extract more snot from it.
