In many cases of spinal cord injury, there is potential for functional recovery to the affected muscles/limbs, if communication between the two can be restored after a spinal injury disrupts them.

When that neural pathway between the brain and muscle is disrupted, the brain no longer knows what nerves are communicating with those muscles. Rehab exercises allow your brain to relearn those neural pathways and reassociate nerve tracks with specific muscles as those nerves heal, allowing for stronger and stronger nerve signals to pass between the brain and your muscles. Depending on the individual, partial or total return of function can be achieved this way.

Additionally, muscles atrophy without nerve signals coming in from the brain. If recovery is to be achieved, it’s important to keep those muscles exercised. Another reason rehab is important.

I assume that is due to most injuries.

By getting stronger muscles in an injuried area, the muscles help giving support.

If you damage a knee you train your leg to help support damaged ligaments and such.

Bones get stronger in the broken area, but tendons and ligaments and such often don’t get as strong as before the injury. Muscles help support these weaker areas and help recovery.

Also, by doing the right exercises you also slowly train the area which helps recovery.
