Every cell in your body burns calories just by undergoing the basic chemical reactions needed to support cellular respiration. The total combined calories burned by all of your cells is what’s referred to as your “basal metabolic rate”, and it accounts for most of the calories you burn every day.

Your brain uses more calories than most of the rest of your body just because your brain cells are always active, and need more energy to maintain their metabolism than things like skin cells or cells in your stomach.

Every living cell in your body burns glucose to generate energy needed for functioning. Nerve cells in your brain do too.
