Trazodone has sedative effects, which reduce brain activity and helps you become unconscious, but being unconscious is different to sleep. In some stages of sleep your brain is more active than when you are awake. So in some respect sleeping pills induce the opposite state of sleep.

So I would say trazodone helps you become unconscious rather than get high quality sleep.

CBT style treatments are just as effective as pills and induce better quality sleep.
