When a computer deletes something, it’s faster and easier to just mark the space as unoccupied and let something else overwrite it eventually than to actually go through and flip all the bits to 0. And in most cases, that’s good enough to consider it deleted.

But it means that the data is still technically there until something overwrites it. If somebody has the motivation and tools to go read it, *and* nothing has overwritten it yet, it may be recoverable.
