If berries last longer in a sealed container, why does the package they come in have an open air design with extra holes?

**Fresh** berries are packaged in containers that allow them to be sprayed with water and allow that water to drain.

**Canned** berries will last longer, but then they are no longer **fresh**. And they require extra processing in order to can them.
