Quiet birds in circled flight, what are they trying to do? or are they just having fun?

Sometimes they’re using the natural difference in pressures to keep themselves in the air with minimal effort while waiting to do something else like hunting or another bird before they fly off. They can be pushed upwards almost indefinitely I think
