Time slows down in life threatening situations?

I came out unharmed in a serious car accident. I became hyper aware of split seconds that felt like minutes.

I hear this phenomenon happens a lot, so why does it seem like time slows down when one is in danger?

It’s a survival strategy. When you’re in an immediate life-or-death situation, your brain temporarily overclocks itself so it can try to figure out a solution before it’s too late to implement it. That state of consciousness isn’t recommended for day-to-day use since it’s energy intensive, but it can potentially save your life if you’re in a pinch.

David Eagleman had a good podcast episode on this, see https://chtbl.com/track/5899E/podtrac.com/pts/redirect.mp3/traffic.omny.fm/d/clips/e73c998e-6e60-432f-8610-ae210140c5b1/534dc725-2971-42a1-b1bf-afaa0107416e/02019237-d860-4832-a26d-afd2000d1fba/audio.mp3
